4 Times You Should Replace Your Faucets

August 15, 2023

While the faucets in your home should last for years, this doesn't mean that you have to wait that long to replace them. In some situations, you may want to remove old faucets and install new ones. Read on to learn more about when you should consider replacing your faucets.

1. Your Faucets Don't Look Good

It's easy to carry on using old faucets just because they still work. However, at some point, you might look at them and realize how old, worn, and shabby they look.

For example, old faucets might lose some of their finish. They might be discolored, scratched, and dented. If you live in a hard water area, then they might also have hard scale deposits and stains on them that are difficult to fully clean away.

If you don't like the way your faucets look, then you can simply switch them out for new ones. New faucets can make a kitchen or bathroom sparkle again.

2. You Want an Upgrade

If you've had your faucets for a while, then you might be keen to upgrade them for practical reasons. For example, if you want to install a new shower over your bathtub, then you might want to upgrade your tub's faucets at the same time. If the shower has modern fittings, then your old faucets might look old-fashioned and out of place.

You may also want to upgrade your kitchen faucets. If you have individual hot and cold faucets, then you might want to install a mixed single tap unit. Or you can get a pull-out faucet or add a pot filler. You can also install a unit that dispenses filtered water.

New faucets let you change fixture styles and functionality. They'll look good and they'll do what you want.

3. Your Faucets Are Damaged

While you can often repair damaged faucets, there are times when you should just replace them because they either can't be repaired or your repair costs will be too high.

Sometimes, this is an easy decision to make. If a faucet stops working and doesn't have an easy fix, then you'll install a new one. However, sometimes, you make this decision when the faucet starts to show signs of damage but before it breaks down completely.

For example, if a faucet has a crack on it, then you can't always fix this damage. If you don't do something about it, then the crack could get worse and the faucet will start to leak.

Or, if you have a rusty faucet, then you may need to just replace the unit. External rust will eat into the metal. If it goes all the way through, then the faucet will leak.

If you hear squeaking or grating when you turn the faucet on or off, then it could be corroding inside. This internal rust is also a problem. It can affect the quality of your water. It can also damage parts inside the faucet. There isn't much you can do to fix this problem apart from installing a replacement.

4. You're Paying for Too Many Repairs

Faucet repairs often make good sense. If you simply need to change a washer or clean out an aerator, then it's more cost-effective to fix the problem than to buy a new faucet.

However, you should consider installing a new unit if you are having to fix a faucet too regularly. If you have to make constant repairs, then the faucet might be about to reach the end of its useful working life. It might be cheaper to install a new one than to keep paying for repairs on a faucet that no longer works efficiently or consistently.
