A slow drain is easy to ignore until the sink won’t empty or the tub fills up while you shower. So how do you know if it’s a quick DIY fix or time to call a plumber? Here’s the short answer.
Why Drains Slow Down
In the kitchen, it’s usually grease and food scraps. In the bathroom, it’s hair and soap buildup. And sometimes the problem is deeper: tree roots or aging pipes in the main sewer line. That last one is common in Millburn and Short Hills, where many homes are older and surrounded by mature trees.
Try This First
If only one drain is slow and everything else works fine, the clog is probably close by. Try these:
- A plunger. Cover the sink’s overflow hole with a wet cloth and use firm, steady pushes.
- Clean the stopper. Pull it out. You’ll likely find a clump of hair.
- A hand drain snake. It’s inexpensive and reaches clogs a few feet down the line.
One thing to skip: chemical drain cleaners. They’re hard on older pipes, rarely clear the full clog, and make the job riskier if a plumber has to work on that drain later.
Call a Pro If You Notice…
- Several drains are slow at the same time
- Gurgling sounds from the toilet or drains
- Water rising in the tub when you flush, or around the basement floor drain
- A sewage smell
- The same drain clogging again and again
- Your DIY attempts didn’t work
These usually point to a blockage in the main line, and no plunger will reach it. If sewage is backing up into your home, stop using water and call right away.
What a Pro Does Differently
A licensed plumber finds the cause first, then picks the right fix: a motorized snake to break through tough clogs, or hydro-jetting to scour grease and roots from the pipe walls. Not sure which one you need? Read Hydro-Jetting vs. Drain Snaking.
The goal isn’t just to clear the drain today. It’s to make sure you’re not calling again next month.
