Steam Boiler Repair in Union County, NJ — From a Family That's Worked on Steam Since 1985

Cold radiators, banging pipes, sight glass full of water, or the boiler keeps shutting off? Steam systems need a plumber who actually knows them — not just a generalist.

Steam heating is becoming a lost art. Most plumbers under 40 have barely touched a steam boiler — let alone the old cast-iron systems still running in Elizabeth, Hillside, Roselle, and the older neighborhoods of Union County. Continental Plumbers has been working on steam boilers for 40+ years. We know the quirks of one-pipe vs two-pipe systems, the diagnostics on low water cutoffs, why your radiators bang, and which 70-year-old boilers have decades of life left. Most steam repairs same-day in heating season.

Common Steam Boiler Problems We Fix

Eight Steam Boiler Issues We Diagnose Every Week

Steam boilers have their own language of symptoms. Here’s what brings in most calls:
Low Water Cutoff Failure

The single most important safety device on your steam boiler — and the most common reason boilers shut down. We test, clean, and replace when needed.

Cold Radiators

Air vent stuck closed, low water level, dirty sight glass, or steam not reaching the radiator. Usually fixable without major work.

Banging or Hammering Pipes

"Water hammer" — caused by condensate backing up where it shouldn't. Pitch issues, blocked main vent, or failing steam trap. Annoying but fixable.

Cloudy or Dirty Sight Glass

Water surface contaminated with oil or sludge. Often means the boiler needs skimming. Affects efficiency and safety.

Short Cycling (Kicking Off Too Soon)

Boiler fires, runs briefly, shuts off. Usually pressuretrol set wrong, or pigtail (siphon) clogged. Wastes fuel.

Water Level Problems

Low water, water disappearing, or filling too much. Could be low water cutoff sensor, auto-feeder issue, or hidden leak.

Uneven Heat Between Radiators

Some rooms toasty, others freezing. Usually venting issues, blocked radiator valves, or main steam line problems.

Pilot Light or Burner Issues

Won't light, won't stay lit, weak flame, or gas valve issues. Common in older boilers with original burner assemblies.

We Get It

The Concerns We Hear About Steam Boilers

"I just bought this house and the steam heat is a mystery to me."

Very common in older Union County homes. Steam heating was the standard from the 1900s through the 1950s — and most original systems are still running. We'll walk you through what you have, what's normal vs. what's a problem, and what maintenance the boiler needs. No talking down to you, no jargon.

"My boiler is 60 years old. Should I be replacing it?"

Maybe — maybe not. Old cast-iron steam boilers are workhorses. We've seen 70- and 80-year-old units still running well with proper maintenance. We assess: pressure vessel condition, efficiency, parts availability, and your fuel costs. If repair makes sense, we repair. If replacement is genuinely the better call, we tell you straight.

"My radiators bang every time the heat comes on — is that normal?"

No. It's a common myth that "steam pipes just bang." Banging is condensate (water) getting smashed by steam — and it's always fixable. Usually pitch, venting, or a failing steam trap. We hear it, find the cause, and fix it. Your house can be quiet.

"I had a plumber out and he said he doesn't really work on steam systems."

Hear this constantly. Steam expertise has been disappearing from the trade — newer plumbers are trained on hot water and forced-air systems. We're one of the few in Union County that still services steam comprehensively. If you've been told "we don't do steam" or "you should just replace it," call us before you spend the money.

Steam Boiler FAQs

Look at the gauge on the boiler. If it reads in PSI and tops out around 5–10 PSI, it's steam. Hot water boilers read in PSI but operate at 12–30 PSI, often with a temperature gauge too. Steam boilers usually have a sight glass (a small vertical glass tube) showing water level — hot water boilers don't.
Banging is condensate (water) being smashed by steam — never normal. Causes: improper pitch on radiators or pipes, failing steam traps (in two-pipe systems), blocked main vent, or too much water in the system. All fixable.
With proper maintenance: 40–60 years for the boiler itself, often longer. The cast-iron pressure vessel is incredibly durable. Burners, valves, and controls need periodic replacement, but the boiler heart often outlasts modern systems by decades.
Sometimes worth it, sometimes not. Steam systems work well when properly maintained. Switching to hot water involves replacing all the radiators (or converting them), new piping, and a new boiler. Major expense. We'll honestly walk you through whether it makes sense for your home.
