Hot Water Boiler Repair in Union County, NJ — Most Issues Fixed the Same Day

No heat, low pressure, leaking boiler, or cold radiators? Hot water (hydronic) heating systems are usually fixable — and most repairs we handle same-day, even in the middle of winter.

Hot water heating is more common than steam in homes built from the 1970s onwards — and like any system, it has its quirks. Low pressure that keeps dropping. Cold spots in the baseboard. A circulator pump that hums but doesn't move water. A pressure relief valve dripping. Continental Plumbers has been repairing hot water (hydronic) boilers across Union County since 1985. We diagnose accurately, repair efficiently, and most calls we handle same-day — 24/7 in heating season.

Common Hot Water Boiler Problems We Fix

Eight Hot Water Boiler Issues We See Every Week

Most hot water boiler problems come down to one of these — and most are fixable in a single visit:
Low Pressure / Pressure Drops

Your boiler needs 12–15 PSI cold. If it keeps dropping, there's a leak somewhere — radiator valve, fitting, expansion tank, or hidden in the floor. We find it.

Air in the System (Cold Spots)

Cold rooms, cold sections of baseboard, gurgling sounds. The system needs proper bleeding — and we identify why air is getting in.

Circulator Pump Failure

Water isn't moving through the system even though the boiler is running. Pump is humming but not pumping, or completely silent. Common repair, usually same-visit.

Expansion Tank Issues

Tank is waterlogged or the diaphragm has failed. Causes pressure spikes, dripping relief valves, and short cycling.

Leaks from the Boiler or Piping

Visible water around the unit, dripping from connections, or moisture on the floor. Different causes — fittings, pump seals, heat exchanger. We find the source.

Boiler Short Cycling

Boiler fires, runs briefly, shuts off, fires again — over and over. Wastes fuel and shortens the boiler's life. Usually a control or sensor issue.

Pressure Relief Valve Discharging

Water dripping from the relief valve pipe. Safety device doing its job — but means something's wrong (high pressure, expansion tank, or temperature issue).

Ignition / Burner Problems

Boiler won't fire, pilot won't stay lit, error codes, or burner failures. Common on both standard and high-efficiency models.

We Get It

The Concerns We Hear About Hot Water Boiler Repairs

"My boiler keeps losing pressure and I have to add water every few weeks."

Very common — and it's always a leak somewhere. Sometimes obvious (visible drip at a fitting), sometimes hidden (a radiator valve weeping under carpet, or a tiny leak in the heat exchanger). We pressure-test the system to find the source. Don't keep refilling — it accelerates corrosion inside the boiler.

"I have cold spots in my baseboards. Did the heat 'go out' of them?"

Almost never — heat doesn't "leave" radiators. Cold spots are almost always trapped air or partial flow restriction. Usually fixable in 30 minutes with proper bleeding and balancing. Sometimes it's a stuck zone valve. We figure it out.

"My boiler is 25 years old. Should I just replace it?"

Depends on the unit and the issue. Hot water boilers typically last 15–25 years. Past that, repair vs. replace is a real conversation. We look at: pressure vessel condition, efficiency rating, parts availability, your fuel costs. If repair makes sense, we repair. If not, we tell you straight and walk you through replacement options.

"My tenant says the heat isn't working in their unit."

Common multi-zone issue in Union County rental properties. Often a single zone valve or thermostat — fixable same-day without affecting other units. We communicate professionally with the tenant, fix the issue, and bill back to you.

Hot Water Boiler Repair FAQs

Look at the pressure gauge. Hot water (hydronic) boilers operate at 12–30 PSI and typically have a temperature gauge too. Steam boilers operate at 1–10 PSI and have a sight glass showing water level. Hot water systems use radiators or baseboard heating; steam systems use radiators with steam vents on them.
There's a leak somewhere — visible or hidden. Common spots: pressure relief valve, expansion tank, fittings, pump seals, radiator valves, or the heat exchanger itself. We pressure-test to locate it. Don't keep adding water without finding the cause — it damages the system.
Annually is a good baseline. If you notice cold spots or gurgling sounds, bleed sooner. If you're bleeding the same radiator constantly, there's an air-introduction problem we should diagnose.
